Belgrade is the centre of culture and art of Serbia. It is Belgrade where our most notable artists create, where over 11.000 theatrical performances, exhibitions, concerts, performance events, and other artistic programs are presented and where prominent authors in the world of art are hosted. Belgrade is the centre of the highest state and national institutions of culture and art: Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Library of Serbia, the National Museum, the National Theatre and the University of Arts.

It is Belgrade where the most significant works of architecture are located, with Kalemegdan accommodating Belgrade Fortress, cultural monuments and other immovable cultural treasures, numerous archeological sites with remnants of developed civilization and culture on Belgrade territory from prehistory until this day.

The City of Belgrade is the founder of 30 cultural institutions (12 theatres, 8 institutions for protection of cultural values, 4 libraries, 6 cultural centers and galleries) and at the same time contribute in the implementation of schedules and scheduled attractions of institutions and artistic associations.

The City of Belgrade is the founder of 11 cultural events (FEST, BITEF, BEMUS, BELEF, International Competition of Music Youth, Festival of Documentary and Short film, October Salon, Joy of Europe, Belgrade Book Fair, Sopot Film Festival, Belgrade Jazz Festival), and also the supporter of 69 events in the field of culture performed in Belgrade.

The Secretariat of Culture within the City Administration is in charge of culture and art.

The first film was shown in Belgrade in 1896 at the "Zlatan krst" cafe (now the "Dušanov grad"), five months after the first show in Paris. The first regular cinema was established in 1906.

International Film Festival – FEST
The Festival hosts presentation of cinematic ultimate art achievements in the world film industry. It is of review nature. The festival is promoted by the FEST Directorate. Held from the last Friday in February thru the first week of March.

Belgrade Festival of Documentary and Short Film
The Festival is of competitive nature. The films are grouped per genres: documentary, short feature film, animated and experimental film, produced in technique of film and video recording. Within the accompanying program there are retrospectives of foreign festivals, Life Achievement awards winners, selection of films of particular country and other. Promoted by the FEST Directorate. Held in the last week of March, in duration of four to five days.

Film Festival Sopot
This festival is organised as a competition between the producers of locally-made feature films. It is held in the first half of July in the main hall of the Sopot Cultural Centre and lasts around five days. It is organised by the management of FEST.

Belgrade Summer Festival – BELEF
International festival that gathers theatre and dance, visual arts and music. Presents innovative artistic programs at squares and streets of Belgrade, theatres and other city venues. Produced and organized by BELEF Center. Held in the period July - August.

Belgrade Music Festivities – BEMUS
The International music event of music ensembles and soloists presenting themselves by performing classical artistic and ethno music as well as pieces of contemporary music production. Held in the halls of Sava centre, Foundation of Ilija M. Kolarac and other theatre houses in the town. Promoted by "Jugokoncert". Held in the first half of October, lasts for about 15 days.

October Salon
Hosting of presentation of the most significant recent achievements of domestic authors in the field of fine and applied arts and design. Held at "Cvijeta Zuzorić" Art Pavilion and ULUS (Association of Fine Artists of Serbia) galleries: "Zvono", "Artget", Faculty of Fine Arts, Education museum, Belgrade Youth Centre and Graphic Collective Gallery. Promoted by the Cultural Centre of Belgrade. Held in October, lasts for 25 days.

International Theatrical Belgrade Adventure – TIBA
The international competition of professional theatres for children. The founder and promoter is "Boško Buha" Theatre. Held in June, in duration of about ten days, in the houses of Belgrade Drama Theatre, Atelje 212, "Boško Buha" Theatre, "Duško Radović" Little Theatre, "Puž" Theatre and the National Theatre.

International Platform of Composers of Serbia (IPCS)
Promoted by the Association of the Composers of Serbia. Held in the second half of May, at the Student’s Cultural Centre.
Monodrama and Pantomime Festival
The event is of competitive type, international. The founder is the Municipal Assembly of Zemun. Held at the beginning of July, in the theatre halls of "Pinokio" Puppet Theatre.

Belgrade International Theatre Festival – BITEF
The Festival is an international festivity of theatrical creativity – of new theatre trends of the international theater and the theatre of Serbia and Montenegro. The Festival is of competitive nature. Held in Belgrade theatre houses, Sava Centre and town space. Promoted by BITEF Theatre. Held in September, lasts for about 15 days.

International Meeting of Children of Europe – Joy of Europe
The International event of children socializing, demonstrating artistic creativity of children coming from the European countries (music, music-performing and visual creativity). The event is held at the Children’s Cultural Centre of Belgrade, Sava Centre, Ada Ciganlija and galleries. Promoted by the Children’s Cultural Centre of Belgrade. Held in the first week of October, lasts for one week.

Belgrade Book Fair
The international event of book publishers and bookstores presenting domestic publishing production of domestic and foreign publishers between two fairs. The overall publishing production of the exhibitors and antiquary books. Separate schedule ensemble is presentation of the country – the official guest of the Fair. Promoted by "Belgrade Fair". Held at the end of October – the beginning of November in the "Belgrade Fair" halls, lasting one week.

Belgrade Jazz Festival
This is an international festival, with a series of concerts by local and foreign performers held in the Dom omladine, the Dom sindikata main hall, Kolarčeva zadužbina and other venues. The organiser is Belgrade Youth Center. It is held at the end of October and lasts around five days.

Museum Night
The “Museum Night” is a unique event, held annyally in the middle of May, in Belgrade and major cities accross Serbia, when museums, galleries and other exhibition spaces are presented to the public in ways they have never seen it before. Unusual and interesting events, concerts, performances, fashion shows and thematic exhibitions, allong with permanent museums exibitions take place in just one night, during unorthodox hours, offering great time and unforgetable festive feel.

Festival of Student’s Film
Hosting of students’ achievements presentation in the filed of cinematic art, films of domestic and foreign academies and authors. Founded by the group of students of the Faculty of Dramatic Arts, promoted by "Mediainvest Communications". Held in the second half of October at the halls of the Yugoslav Film Archives Museum, Faculty of Dramatic Arts, SKC (Students’ Cultural Centre).


Belgrade International Meetings of Writers
The Meetings are of invitational type where the participants offer own papers on the determined topic. The meetings include organizing of literary evenings and presenting of literary creators. Held in the second half of September, at the Writers’ Guild of Serbia and the

National Library of Serbia.
Belgrade Meetings of Translators and Interpreters
The meetings are of international type. The meetings host presentation of translational literary works, theoretical and practical accomplishments in translating. The founder and the promoter is the Association of Literary Translators of Serbia. Held in the second half of May, in the premises of the Association and at the National Library of Serbia.


Guitar Art festival
The event is international, covering competition of guitar-players, per categories, masterly workshops and concerts. The promoters are the Cultural Centre of Belgrade and the Yugoslav Association of classical guitarists. Held in April, at the Cultural Centre of Belgrade and Foundation of Ilija Milosavljević Kolarac.


Refrakt – Regional festival of alternative culture
Hosting of regional alternative theater and music performances, art, film and literary shows. Promoted by Belgrade Youth Centre. Held in April, at Belgrade Youth Centre as well as in Kragujevac, Zrenjanin, Novi Sad and Zagreb.


Festival "Flute always and everywhere"
Hosting presentation of concerts, masterly workshops, exhibitions of instruments and other ancillary attractions. Promoted by the Cultural Centre of Belgrade. Held in the period August-September, at the halls of Cultural Centre of Belgrade and Foundation of Ilija M. Kolarac, as well as outdoors.


Harp Festival
The event hosts concerts of musical works for harp. The founder and the promoter is the Association of harpists and harp-friends of Serbia. Held in May, at "Cvijeta Zuzorić" Art Pavilion, Foundation of Ilija M. Kolarac and "Madlenianum".


One-writer Festival
Hosting of comprehensive presentation of creative work of a reputable local writer. The founder and the promoter is the Cultural Centre of Belgrade. The founder and the promoter is Cultural Centre of Belgrade. Held in May.


International Graphics Biennale
Hosting of selected graphic works presentation to be evaluated by the international jury. Promoted by ULUS. Held in December.

Biennale of Drawings and Miniature Arts
Traditional exhibition of the Association members’ work. Promoted by ULUS. Held in December, at "Cvijeta Zuzorić" Art Pavilion.

International Biennale of ceramics "The Cup"
Promoted by ULUPUDS. Held in November-December, at "Cvijeta Zuzorić" Art Pavilion.

"Gifts" Project
Multimedia exhibition of gifts made to Josip Broz Tito, the former president of SFRY, and the documents under the collection of the Museum of History of Yugoslavia, along with audio and video recordings. Promoted by REX Cultural Centre. Held in September, at the Rex Gallery.

"Ada" Sculptural Workshop
The authors create own works at the workshop (statuary material), exhibited and installed at Adi Ciganlija. The founder and the promoter is JP "Ada Ciganlija". Held in September.

Fluks 03 - "Painting will tell you"
Research and discussions on position and status of population of various urban environments followed by research presentation. Promoted by Rex Cultural Center; author of the project Nebojša Milekić. Held in the course of the year in Ripanj, Borča, Batajnica, Sremčica and Kaluđerica.

Urban Demo Fest
Performance of urban environment music. The promoter of the event is "Marko" Agency. Held in October.
